Water Soluble Graphite Brushes

graphite.jpg

Here are some Photoshop brushes that I made from washing water over scribbles done with Prismacolor Water Soluble Graphite Pencils. With some angle, scattering, and opacity jitter set in the Brushes panel, they are good for building up smudgy textures.

Cracked House Paint Brushes

cracks.jpg

Here is a set of brushes made from photos of cracked house paint. The first five are more graphic, high contrast versions. The second five are made from the same photos, but I left some tone in them for a more realistic feel.

Pencil Brushes

pencil-scribble.jpg

Here are a couple of Photoshop brush sets that I made from pencil marks which are good for building up grungy textures. The first set was made from hard scribble marks.

I like to turn the Size Jitter off and set the Angle Jitter to Pen Pressure control around 30% in the Shape Dynamics settings. I set the Scatter to 100% with Pen Pressure control and the Count to 2. With these brushes I like to set the Opacity(under Other Dynamics) to Pen Control so that I can vary the density of the brush with my Wacom tablet. They can be downloaded here: cp_pencil_scribble.zip

The second set was made with softer leads on textured paper. I like to turn off the shape dynamics so that the texture stays consistent. Interesting effects can be had by playing with the Shape Dynamics options, though.

Stippling Brushes

stipple01.jpg

Here’s a small set of Photoshop brushes that I made for creating a stippling effect. I used .25mm, .35mm, .5mm, and 1mm rapidographs to make them.

Screen shot 2010-10-28 at 1.01.08 PM.png

I like to turn off the size and roundness jitters and set the scattering to a low value or turn it off as well. If you aren’t interested in an authentic stippled look, you might play around with some of those settings and see what you can come up with.

A zip file of the brushes can be downloaded here.
